Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Primary responsibilities include the day-to-day underwriting of Consumer, Indirect and Business loans. Evaluates the character, capacity and possible collateral of borrowers to make the appropriate loan decision.

 

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assumes responsibility for reviewing and accurately evaluating the credit worthiness of potential borrowers.
  • Evaluates applicant’s employment history. Ensures that the probability of continued employment is good. Verifies applicant had adequate employment history and ensures that all income used in qualifying is expected to continue. Evaluates likelihood of job tenure.
  • Evaluates adequacy of the applicant’s income and the probability that the member will be able to meet the expected financial obligations. Examines income trends and determines possibilities for increased income in future years.
  • Reviews borrower’s credit. Reviews the manner in which obligations have been met and financial affairs managed. Investigates derogatory credit.
  • Completes all underwriting functions in accordance with various program requirements, Michigan First Credit Union standards, and related legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures a documented record is kept of the underwriting process documentation in the application notes.
  • Ensures that all lending conditions have been satisfactorily met prior to closing. Assumes responsibility for reviewing appraisals and ensuring that determined values are well documented.
  • Ensures properties do not need repairs, and sets conditions for inspections if repairs are necessary.
  • Reviews comparables to ensure they meet the guidelines for adjustments.
  • Reviews appraisal and ensures that risks are appropriate and meet all guidelines of the applicable loan type.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining professional working relations with members and external lending professionals and governmental agencies.
  • Develops and grows the loan portfolio with quality loans and superior service to our Members.
  • May work with outside vendors (Dealers, business partners, etc.) to establish a relationship with the Credit Union that provides superior level of service to our members.
  • Maintains awareness of changes in the credit granting field, including government regulation, technological advancements in computerized credit granting, consumer needs and preferences, and other related topics.
  • Ensures the Core Values, Isms and other aspects of the culture are upheld. Be an advocate of the Michigan First culture, supporting diversity, philosophy and other Credit Union initiatives. Fosters a positive image of Michigan First via professional representation in all contacts and complies with all of Michigan First’s mission and vision goals.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have at least five years’ underwriting experience in a bank, credit union, finance company or savings and loan, or the equivalent combination of formal training and experience obtained at a credit granting institution of comparable size and complexity. Manual underwriting experience is required.
  • Experience working in indirect lending, finance company, consumer lending or working with car dealerships is a plus.
  • Must have experience preparing loan production reports, analyzing reports and developing appropriate recommendations and solutions to present to leadership.
  • Must have a proven track record of following ethical standards, making solid decisions and following safe and sound lending practices.
  • Need to have experience utilizing a loan processing system and a Personal Computer. Must have experience with Microsoft Applications such as Excel, Word and Power Point.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal presentation and communication skills.
  • Must be able to present professionally, persuasively and effectively to external and internal individuals and/or groups.
