    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Mortgage Underwriter is an advanced-level position within Michigan First Mortgage.  The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for reviewing loan submissions to ensure that they meet agency, investor and/or Company guidelines and evaluate the loan in such a way as to maximize company profit, minimize company risk exposure and provide a positive member experience.

     

    KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Reviews new loan submissions and conditions ensuring they meet the applicable guidelines.  Resourceful and skillful use of internal and external (e.g., agency) policies, procedures, guidelines and tools is essential to success in this role [e.g., automated underwriting systems such as Desktop Underwriter (DU) and loan prospector (LP) as well as agency handbooks and selling guides]
    • Ensures that Company operating standards are met according to policies and procedures, as well as service level standards
    • Reviews applications and all pertinent disclosures to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and investor requirements are met
    • Reviews property appraisal reports, as well as internal and external tools, for evaluating acceptable collateral and value
    • Analyzes documentation such as credit, income, assets, appraisal and title to make sound underwriting decisions based on this analysis
    • Reviews documentation within Company paperless system (e.g., Encompass) and ensures documents are properly classified and organized
    • Makes quality underwriting decisions while maintaining Company turn-time expectations
    • Reviews and clears conditions on all loans to ensure a complete loan package prior to closing
    • Utilizes proprietary and on-line tools (e.g., Fraudguard to help combat fraudulent activity and ensure quality loan decisions)
    • Communicates across various team channels with clear and concise language to ensure laymen understanding of requirements relative to originating a saleable loan
    • Engages specific strategies (e.g., determines appropriate individuals for problem resolution, etc.) to resolve customer (internal and external) questions and concerns
    • Continually reviews underwriting environment, and suggests improvement opportunities to management
    • Acts as a recognized subject matter expert within the Company and partners with management on underwriting-related issues by providing analytical support, and counseling advice for their functional areas

    • Learns and utilizes EMEC (Every Member’s Experience Counts) in day-to-day responsibilities when communicating with members only.
    • Special projects, as assigned

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

    • Intermediate knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer
    • Expert knowledge of conventional (e.g., Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac), FHA, & VA (Credit required, SAR preferred) required.  MSHDA, and USDA preferred but not required
    • Proficiency of Encompass a plus
    • Exceptional customer service
    • Underwriter designation certification (HUD DE, VA SAR)
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels
    • Ability to positively project the Company and department
    • Associate’s degree with an emphasis in business administration, finance, accounting or related field of study or equivalent combination of training experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job

    Experience
    Three + years previous experience in a similar roll

     

    Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Bachelor’s degree in business or higher education
    • Seven + years previous experience in a similar role
    • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building skills
